The Mews is 23 eco-conscious architectural homes

Architects + Developer

Tony Stark and Rick Corsini are award-winning architects. Their work encompasses “restaurant and retail design (including concessions at LAX), creative workplaces, mixed-use urban infill buildings, often related to historic buildings, and the occasional custom home.” As resident owner of a unit in Gregory Ain’s Avenel Homes in Silver Lake, Corsini, along with fellow architect and resident Gordon Olschlager, helped guide the restoration of the complex, “toward its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Avenel Homes is one of only three post-war modernist buildings in Los Angeles listed on the National Register.”

The Mews developers, RLG Properties, include projects designed by architects Richard Neutra, Gregory Ain, Kenneth Lind, and Corsini + Stark. They’ve even developed an affordable boutique hotel brand called Shelter. The firm was the first to build under the Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance, which established a new hybrid housing typology that resembled row townhomes on individual “small lots.”

The House Tour

The design of the development stems from several historic housing types. Corsini explains the project is a “grouping of small dwellings which front on an alley or pedestrian passage,” and combines this with traditional urban row housing, adding a courtyard that becomes the heart and soul of the house, and then using a clear modernist idea of space.” The houses are built in two rows with an internal alley.

This is a street-facing residence. Spanning two stories, the main level features indoor/outdoor living. Retractable glass walls open to a private courtyard. Finish materials include polished concrete floors, an open-concept floor plan. Polished concrete floors and a kitchen equipped with custom dark wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and a striking marble waterfall island. There’s a powder room. You also have direct access from the two-car garage.

All three bedrooms are on the upper level. The primary bedroom features mirrored closets, modern blinds, and an en-suite bathroom. Two sizable guest bedrooms and one full bathroom complete this floor.

The Neighborhood

The Mews offers a balance between a peaceful retreat and urban convenience. It’s moments away from the neighborhood’s boutique shopping, popular cafes and restaurants, the weekly farmers’ market, equestrian trails, and the biking path along the LA River. This prime location offers easy access to Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Glendale, and Griffith Park.
