The most interesting interiors today are embracing personality, serendipity and a sense of lived-in charm.” If this is true, Emmy Ellison, owner of deMaroc and this grand Spanish-style home in Los Feliz, is a decade ahead of this brewing interior trend. Now for sale, Emmy reflects on curating a space worthy of a spot in Architectural Digest.
The Spanish-style home stands on a wide, coveted, tree-lined street north of Los Feliz Boulevard. Enveloped by mature landscaping on all sides, the gated entry opens to a verdant garden leading to the front door. Inside, the space opens to a double-height foyer, revealing a classic foursquare layout.
Each room is a visual treat. As you roam, the grand, voluminous rooms are layered with light, color, and texture. All subtly tethered together by family heirlooms, art, and the color purple.
Emmy: “Pete [her then-husband] and I lived in a two-bedroom house. It actually had three bedrooms, but the third was downstairs. We had just spent a ton of money redoing it with Marmol Radziner. It was perfect, and it was beautiful.”
Then the couple learned they were expecting another child.
Emmy: “I was sort of bummed to move, but we started to look. There was nothing out there. Pete really wanted to go to Hancock Park. He wanted like a big family home with a big yard. Something more traditional. And that just did not exist in this area. I didn’t want to leave this area and this neighborhood.”
“When this came on the market, I was like, holy shit. It was a beautiful street. It had a guest house. It had a pool. I mean, it was the perfect house for a growing family. It checked every single box.”
Very pregnant, they moved in. Pulling on her Southern roots, Emmy set out to create a traditional home with a colorful twist using bold color combinations and patterns to add a striking yet inviting tone to the formal layout. The house flows easily from room to room and to the outdoors, making it conducive to entertaining.
Emmy: “In the summer you can open up all the windows. You can have the game on while the kids are in the pool. If you’re hosting something formal, you have a beautiful dining room and a formal living room with a fireplace. A lot of holidays have been wonderful here.”
“You can really throw a good party at this house. From kids’ birthday parties out in the driveway with inflatable slides, and school parties, to fundraisers. It’s a house for every occasion.”
When asked what she’ll miss most about living in her Spanish-style home in Los Feliz, Emmy says, “I’m gonna miss my room. I’m gonna miss looking out at the views of Downtown. Every night when my girls are home, the three of us crawl into my bed, and we watch a show. Right now it’s the Gilmore Girls.”
