Built in 1937, at the dawn of modernism, “Los Angeles architects (both native-born and immigrant) had developed a free-thinking, exploratory Modernism blended with commercial pragmatism that generated new forms, new architectures, and a new decentralized city.” This midcentury modern house is a prime example of residential life in Los Angeles shifting into the modernist era. Located in the hills of Eagle Rock, the house stands moments from the neighborhood’s restaurants and cafés.

The House Tour
The L-shaped dwelling wrapped in old redwood stands slightly tucked back from the street at the curve of the cul-de-sac. A stone driveway ends at the one-car garage, currently used as a workshop. A flight of concrete stairs leads you to the main entrance.
Inside opens to the public spaces looking onto one another. The large living room has a wall of sliding glass doors that runs the length of the room, opening to a backyard big enough for a pool. Above, redwood beams and veneer line the ceiling, while stained concrete floors are underfoot.

The 1,523 square feet of internal space holds three bedrooms and one-and-three-quarter bathrooms. On the main level, a hidden door by the fireplace in the living room disguises the entrance to one of the bedrooms. Another bedroom on this level is en-suite with a wall of sliding glass opening to the yard.
Up a flight of stairs, an airy main bedroom where you can sit and enjoy picturesque views through large custom windows. Detached from the house is a studio that’s a great space for an office or yoga. Read more about living in this dwelling in the ‘My House’ series.

The Neighborhood
Tucked in the hills of Eagle Rock, this midcentury modern house is a retreat from city life. However, Eagle Rock Recreation Center is nearby, offering year-round sports, classes, camps, and activities to the neighborhood’s residents. You’re moments away from local favorites like Casa Bianca Pizza Pie, Little Beast Restaurant, and the dog park.
With easy freeway access, Silver Lake, Highland Park, and Pasadena are moments away, too.
