Buff & Hensman designed hundreds of houses in California including this 1960 Nichols Canyon home called the Ajioka House.

When current owner, Derek Mattison, purchased 2563 Nichols Canyon Road in 2008 the home needed work. He told Architectural Digest “ a built-with-duct-tape feel. All the auxiliary structures were a little off, interior columns were in inconvenient places, and the landscaping was a random collection of trees and shrubs. The whole property needed to be retouched in some way.”

He tasked Commune, a Los Angeles-based design studio “consistently included in the AD 100 and Elle Décor A-List” to bring the home back to its intended glory.

After a two year renovation, the two-story, three-bedroom, three-bathroom dwelling, sited on .75 acres, is clad inside and out with reclaimed wood and boasts soaring ceilings intersected with architectural beams, concrete floors, a dramatic brick fireplace, and a “high-tech Boffi kitchen equipped with a 24-foot walnut counter.”

The first floor opens to an expansive outdoor deck complete with large pool, a full bar, outdoor shower, fire pit and cascading water feature designed by Stan Bitters.
Listed at $6.995 million, the gated property also includes a pool house, an office over the garage, and a two-car garage and motor court.
